𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 "𝗚𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀." 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 "𝗚𝘂𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘀."

In almost every organization I advise, "Data Governance" is a dirty word. It implies committees, red tape, and slow innovation.

But in my doctoral research, I found a paradox: Organizations with stricter governance actually innovated faster.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗩𝗶𝗲𝘄: It comes down to "Trust Velocity." When users don't trust the data because definitions are loose or lineage is broken, they double-check everything. They maintain shadow spreadsheets. They hesitate. That is friction.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗿 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: In my recent tenure as Interim Director, we didn't implement governance to police the team. It was implemented to free them.

Think of it like Formula 1. You don't put brakes on a car to make it go slow. You put brakes on a car so the driver has the confidence to go fast.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆: When you define clear guardrails for MDM, adoption doesn't drop; it increases because the data finally means something.

If your governance program feels like a "Dept. of No," you are doing it wrong. Real governance is simply the architecture of trust.
