70%
The Failure Rate.
Despite massive investment, global BI projects fail at a rate between 65% and 80%. My research confirms that for SMEs, this is rarely a technology failure; it is a failure of organizational readiness. In my doctoral research, I analyzed the critical success factors for Cloud Business Intelligence implementations. The data is clear: without a specialized governance framework, migration projects simply move technical debt from on-premise to the cloud, inflating OPEX without delivering insight.
THE CLOUD BI ADOPTION FRAMEWORK
Successful Cloud BI is not a software purchase; it is an organizational transformation. Based on qualitative inquiry with veteran BI practitioners, I have identified six strategic imperatives required to turn data into a competitive advantage :
Strategic Alignment: Moving beyond passive support to executive ownership of KPIs and mission.
Disciplined Governance: Implementing formal demand management and intake structures to prevent scope creep.
Engineering Rigor: Architecting modular, scalable pipelines rather than ad-hoc cloud builds.
Active Collaboration: Embedding business stakeholders as co-creators of the solution, not just consumers.
Institutionalized Trust: Establishing data stewardship and lineage to ensure accuracy is non-negotiable.
Adoption-First Strategy: Engaging end-users in the design phase, not just at handover.
